UMass Lowell Riverhawks 2007/2008 Recruiting Information (Stats through games as of 11/12/06)
Coach Blaise MacDonald's sixth recruiting class at UMass Lowell will once again be a large one, consisting of around ten new River Hawks. The Hawks should graduate eight players in the summer of 2007. The seniors are defensemen J.R. Bria (Monroe, CT), Cleve Kinley (Powell River, BC), Jake Pence (Owatonna, MN) and Adam Stanieich (Stoneham, MA). The departing forwards are: Todd Fletcher (Chelmsford, MA), Rene Gauthier (Tecumseh, ONT), Jeremy Hall (Mays Landing, NJ), and Jason Tejchma (Muskegon, MI). Players that have signed an NLI (National Letter of Intent) will be highlighted in red. Players in this class cannot sign an NLI till November of 2006.
The first recruit for the 07/08 year was originally an 06/07 commit, but I believe was asked by the coaching staff to come in a year later. F Todd Bartelson (born 12/18/86) is a local player from Pepperell, MA. He played for the Valley Junior Warriors (EJHL) in the 05/06 season, putting up a 16-21-37 line with 44 PIM in 40 games. Bartelson is 6', 170. He has put up 8-9-17 in 20 games so for for the Jr. Warriors. Two Canadian born players made commitments around the same time to the UML Coaching Staff. LW Scott Campbell of the Pembroke Lumber Kings (COJHL) will be a new River Hawk for the 07/08 season. Campbell finished the 05/06 season fifth on his team with a 25-36-61 line in 45 games, with 70 PIM. He notched 11 power play goals during the season. The 6'2, 210 pound forward from Navan, ON was born 6/6/86. According to his team bio, he's a physical player who is versatile. Campbell leads the COJHL at this point of the 06/07 season with a 23-30-53 line in just 20 games, with 9 PPG. The second player is LD Maury Edwards from the Alberni Valley Bulldogs of the BCHL. From Rocky Rapids, Alberta, the 5'11", 176 pound blue liner was born on 3/16/87. In his rookie season of 05/06 in the BCHL, Edwards put up a 10-27-37 line in 57 games with just 15 penalty minutes. According to the BCHL site, all 10 of his goals were power play goals. Edwards currently has a 7-17-24 line in 20 games, with 6 PPG. The River Hawks apparently have decided to not only add speedy recruits, which they've done in the last couple of classes, but some big boys as well. Adding to Scott Campbell for '07, the River Hawks just got a commitment from Doug Clarkson, a 6'6, 225 RW. Clarkson played last year for the Toronto Thunderbirds (OPJHL) and is currently playing for the Brampton Capitals (same OPJHL program as 2006 recruits Stegnar and Bergeron spent time with). Born in Etobicoke, ONT, on 6/20/88 according to the Thunderbirds site, finished the 05/06 season with 44 GP, 8-13-21 line and 95 PIM. He also participated in the Chowder Cup in Boston in August of 2005, with his team finishing in the final four for the tournament. Clarkson currently has a 4-12-16 line in 23 games, with 56 PM. After going with a large class that wasn't exactly what could be defined as tall ... the River Hawks have now picked up another commitment from a player who's more than 6 feet tall. 6'1" Vernon Vipers (BCHL) rookie forward Patrick Cey is the most recent commit to the River Hawks. Born 6/13/87, Cey is still considered a rookie as he only played in 16 games during the 05/06 season for the Vipers putting up a 8-5-13 line in the process. So far in the 06/07 season, the youngster from Saskatoon, SK, has a 9-13-22 in 19 games with 5 PPG. Apparently the River Hawks have put together a nice pipeline with the Brampton Capitals, as yet another Capitals player will be joining the River Hawks program. Forward Matt Ferreira, who was also born in Brampton, has committed to UML. Ferreira, a 5'10", 175 pounder, is currently in his second year with the Capitals. Born 11/2/88 (the youngest of the 06 recruits at this point) had a 21-21-42 line in his rookie year with the Caps. This year he is currently ranked 9th in the OPJHL with a 19-18-37 line in 25 games. His 13 goals and 6 assists in September earned him Player of the Month honors for the West division. The River Hawks picked up a commitment from a very young blue liner in Evan Zych of the Milton Ice Hawks (OPJHL). The 5'11", 180 pound defenseman played for the Cambridge Jr. B team last year before moving on to Milton. Born 4/27/89 (the youngest player in the incoming class for 07) in Kilbride, Ontario, Zych currently has a 2-12-14 line in 26 games. Out of his 12 assists, 10 have come on Ice Hawks power plays. Last August (2005), Zych was invited to participate in a camp to make up the Ontario Provincial team. He was one of 86 of the top 16 year olds invited to participate. Zych decommitted from UML due to the issues that the UMass Board of Trustees started up. Defenseman Ryan Blair of the Bay State Breakers (EJHL) is a late commitment for the 07 class for UML. The Ashburn, VA native has posted a 7-14-21 line in 34 games with 34 PIM. Born 5/1/86, the guess here is that Blair will be a walk-on to the program. The young man is 6'4", 215 pounds. He was a Second-Team All-Met region player in the DC area his senior year. He also represented the EJHL Selects in November of 2006 at the USA Hockey National Junior Jamboree.
